Myopia, Generosity in Newport Beach

Share

As I finished reading the series of articles on Newport Beach this morning (“Newport Under Glass,” Feb. 16), I thought that statistically The Times captured the city quite well. What was missing was a sense of the great spirit of caring and generosity that Newport Beach residents show, especially toward groups that work with children.

The Sea Base has experienced this in our work with youth. We have been a part of Newport for 56 years, operated by Orange County Council Boy Scouts, but open to all Orange County youth. When we have activities for inner-city children, disabled children, abused children, we use volunteers to instruct and guide. Newport Beach residents welcome these opportunities to share.

Fishing trips for underprivileged children, Christmas parade grandstand seats and boats donated to Baja youth groups through the Sea Base are other examples of Newport generosity. Residents have also been generous with donations of money and vessels to the Sea Base, supporting programs open to all youth.

If Newport Beach is to be widely known for one characteristic, it should be the generosity residents, businesses and organizations demonstrate toward all children.
