In an effort to gain a berth on the U.S. men’s team for next month’s World Indoor Track Championships, Butch Reynolds won his 400-meter trial heat Saturday in Boston.
Reynolds, who has returned to competition this year after a controversial two-year drug suspension by the International Amateur Athletic Federation, finished in 46.93 seconds, 0.03 seconds faster than Darnell Hall, in their heat. Jason Rouser won the other heat in 46.79, with 1991 world indoor champion Antonio Pettigrew second in 47.00.
The two fastest finishers in today’s final will represent the United States in the 400 meters March 12-14 at Toronto, with the third and fourth finishers joining the first two on the 1,600-meter relay team.
