CBS Buys Theater for Letterman Use in N.Y., Paper Says
CBS has bought the old Ed Sullivan Theater so that David Letterman can stay in New York when he moves his late-night show from NBC to CBS this summer, a published report said.
The deal was wrapped up Saturday and details are to be announced today, the New York Times reported.
CBS paid about $4 million for the theater that was the site of the Beatles’ first live television appearance in the United States in 1964, the paper said.
CBS is planning to spend several million dollars renovating the 1,200-seat theater, said Edward Grebow, the network’s senior vice president of operations.
CBS officials would not comment Sunday about their plans for the Letterman show.
Since it was announced several weeks ago that Letterman was giving up his “Late Night With David Letterman” show on NBC to do an earlier show for CBS, speculation has been intense over whether the show would emanate from New York or Los Angeles.
The newspaper reported that the theater was purchased with help from the city. Grebow told the newspaper that tax breaks had been discussed.
