Liquor Barn to Close Most Stores: Liquor Barn, a La Jolla-based liquor store chain, said it will close 20 of its 28 stores, cut 200 jobs from its payroll and move its headquarters to San Francisco. California’s grim retail environment, which has clobbered earnings at the chain, is blamed for the retrenchment. Liquor Barn operated 104 stores at its peak in 1987. Since 1988, it has been owned by Intermark Inc., a diversified holding company that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October. The eight surviving Liquor Barn locations, which will be converted to warehouse formats, are in San Francisco, San Jose, Mountain View, Walnut Creek, San Rafael, Albany, Redding and San Diego.
