GM to Lay Off 11,000 in a Single Day: In one of the biggest single corporate layoffs in years, General Motors Corp. said it will put as many as 11,000 idled union workers out on the street next week because it can no longer afford to pay them. The employees, who lost their regular assembly line jobs last year as GM restructured, have been collecting full pay and benefits under a special $1.7-billion income security fund called the GM Jobs Bank program, which has run out of money. The layoffs will affect workers mostly in Michigan and Ohio.
