Floods have killed 500 people and caused $1 billion in damage in one of Iran’s biggest natural disasters, the Iranian news agency IRNA said Thursday.

Tehran has appealed for international help to cope with the damage, which Iran’s mission at the United Nations said was the worst since a strong earthquake devastated a large area near the Caspian coast in 1990, the agency said.

The floods damaged or washed away more than 150,000 residential and commercial buildings, 395,000 acres of farmland, 9,300 miles of roads and 1,000 bridges, IRNA quoted the mission as saying. In addition, about 250,000 livestock were killed, it said.

IRNA said the U.N. Development Program and the U.N. Children’s Fund have sent a team to the stricken areas to assess the damage and plan long-term assistance.
