President Clinton’s Plan to Raise Taxes

As soon as President Clinton uttered the word “sacrifice,” and as soon as he mentioned raising taxes, the wails of discontent sprang up from all the various sectors of society. “Not us!” screamed the elderly. “Broken campaign promises!” bellowed the middle and working classes. “It’ll break our backs; ruin the recovery!” cried the owners of businesses.

No one group wants to be stuck bearing the burden of Clinton’s deficit-cutting measures, yet everybody wants the deficit cut. What’s more, everyone expects Clinton to take care of it. “He promised,” after all. Folks, you can’t have it both ways. It seems to me that the only fair solution is for each person to pay some amount toward reducing our debt. That is exactly what President Clinton is talking about.
