NORTH HILLS : Life Term Urged in Double Slaying

Share

A Van Nuys Superior Court jury recommended Monday that a Reseda man convicted of killing his former girlfriend and her sister be sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

Judge Howard J. Schwab can either follow the jury’s recommendation or ignore it when he sentences Dean Roger McGrath on March 29 on two counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

The jury took only two hours on Feb. 16 to convict McGrath, 31, in the shooting deaths of his former girlfriend, Marleen Taylor, 32, and her sister, Kathleen Fein, 30, in their North Hills home in July, 1990. A man who was living at the time with the two women, Anthony DeLuca, 31, was wounded as he attempted to flee.

McGrath, a former sheet metal worker, had admitted committing the shootings but said he did so to stop attempts on his life by the three people.

However, Deputy Dist. Atty. Sera J. Boyadjian said McGrath had long abused his girlfriend and killed her after she decided to end their relationship.
