New Airbus Plane Debuts: Airbus Industrie rolled out its latest aircraft and rejected attacks by President Clinton on government subsidies for the successful European consortium. The rollout of the 186-seat A321 marks an important step forward for Deutsche Aerospace, or DASA, which aims to become a global aircraft manufacturer. The A321 is the first plane in the Airbus family to be fully assembled in Germany. The plane is also the first major aircraft to be assembled in Germany since World War II. Juergen Schrempp, DASA management board chairman, dismissed Clinton’s charge last month that the subsidies Airbus gets from European governments are destroying American jobs.
