Pico Rivera : Curbside Recycling Started for Yard Waste, Newspapers
A curbside recycling program for newspaper and yard waste has begun with the delivery of yellow 33-gallon trash containers to homes throughout the city.
About 12,600 single-family residences included in the program will be billed $1.33 a month to pay for the recycling.
Glass, plastic and aluminum cans are not part of the curbside program, but the city is planning sites where residents may drop them off, officials said.
The city’s trash hauler, Metropolitan Waste Co., will collect the recyclables on the same day it picks up the trash.
Yard waste, including grass clippings, leaves, plant trimmings, bark and wood chips, will be taken to Whittier Fertilizer Co. in Pico Rivera to be composted into mulch. Residents will be able to pick up a free bag of mulch from the fertilizer company every three months, Assistant City Manager Bill Shannon said.
Residents may buy additional recycling barrels from the city or use free stickers available at City Hall to designate trash barrels as recycling barrels.
