TUSTIN : Ideas for Renaming 3 City Parks Sought

Share

Members of the community are being invited by the Parks and Recreation Commission to provide ideas for renaming three neighborhood parks--Centennial, Magnolia Tree and Pepper Tree.

The City Council has expressed concern that these names are creating confusion, said Randy Westrick, the city’s recreation supervisor. Centennial has been confused with Santa Ana’s Centennial, and Magnolia Tree Park is in the Pepper Tree neighborhood.

The deadline for submitting names is 5 p.m. April 2.

Jim Kane, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission, said the commission will discuss the names submitted on April 15 at the Tustin Area Senior Center. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.

In 1989, the city adopted guidelines on naming parks, which recommended that they be named after trees whenever appropriate. Parks should be named for a person only if that person pays for developing the park, the guidelines said.

A copy of the guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Department.
