Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Officer’s Retrial in Capital Delayed
A Florida appeals court delayed the racially charged manslaughter retrial of suspended Miami policeman William Lozano so it could decide if it would be proper to move the case to Tallahassee, the state capital. State attorneys argued that a judge may have made a “reversible error” when he moved the case from Orlando because Tallahassee has a higher percentage of blacks. Lozano, 33, shot a black motorcyclist in 1989, and the ensuing death of a black passenger touched off three nights of rioting in Miami. The Colombian-born Lozano was convicted by a racially mixed jury. An appeals court overturned that verdict.
