Whitman’s Candy Is Sold to Russell Stover: Specialty food company Pet Inc. said it sold its Whitman’s Chocolates business and trademark to Russell Stover for about $35 million. The sale had been opposed by the Bakery, Confectionery & Tobacco Workers Union, which said about 600 workers will lose their jobs. Under the deal, Pet will retain some unspecified assets of Whitman’s. The Whitman’s chocolate factory in Philadelphia, which employs 750 workers and posted sales of about $85 million last year, is expected to be permanently shut by mid-June.
