The new head of the San Fernando Valley chapter of the NAACP vowed Monday work to provide young people with alternatives to gangs and other harmful activities.

“The biggest problem with our young people is they don’t have positive things to do,” said Zedar Broadous, 45, who assumed leadership of the 43-year-old Valley branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People this week. “We need to come up with programs and activities . . . and make them aware of the opportunities they do have.”

Broadous said he will also work to highlight positive contributions by youth to counteract media images of violence and crime on the streets.
