JERUSALEM : Headed for Peace?
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin heads for Washington on Wednesday for talks with President Clinton that are likely to be crucial in the resumption of the Arab-Israeli peace negotiations next month.
Rabin’s discussions with Clinton next Monday will determine the prime minister’s willingness to improve Israel’s offer for the accelerated repatriation of the 396 suspected Muslim militants now exiled in southern Lebanon.
As the man who handles the “American account,” Rabin wants a close rapport with Clinton. He also wants assurances that a more active U.S. role in the talks will not translate into pressure on Israel; for this, he will seek support from American Jewish groups, notably the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
