Obituary : Harper Goff; Film Stage Designer Did Work for Disney

Harper Goff, 81, an artist and film and stage production designer whose primary legacy will be the alligator-like submarine Nautilus in Walt Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and the sketches for Main Street and the Jungle River Cruise, both at Disneyland. He was a magazine illustrator before going to Hollywood, where he produced sets for such Warner Bros. films as “Objective Burma,” “Casablanca,” “Charge of the Light Brigade” and Sergeant York.” He also was a jazz musician who played with The Firehouse Five Plus Two, a group of Disney employees who performed and recorded in their off-hours. For many years the band was a fixture at New Orleans Square in Disneyland. Goff’s final pictures were “Fantastic Voyage” and “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” In Palm Springs on March 3 of heart failure.
