Whittier : 7 Buildings Nominated as Historical Resources
Seven buildings, the oldest a Victorian home built in 1904, have been nominated for the city’s Official Register of Historical Resources.
The City Council is scheduled to vote at a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. April 6 on adding the buildings to the list.
The nominations were selected by the Planning Commission from a list of 30 buildings compiled by the Cultural Arts Commission. So far, 19 of the buildings have been added to the register, city officials said.
Placing the buildings on the historical register allows the city to prevent them from being altered or destroyed.
The proposed buildings include: the Landreth House, a Victorian home built in 1904; the Smullins House, an adaptation of the shingle-style home built in 1916; Whittier College’s Mendenhall Hall, Spanish Renaissance-style, 1928; Whittier Women’s Club, Spanish Renaissance-style, 1931; the Cool-A-Cool Ice Cream Plant, Art Deco, 1930; Wardman Theater, Art Deco, 1932, and Whittier National Trust & Savings Bank, Art Deco, 1932.
