The specter of political chaos in Italy receded when the scandal-tainted government of Prime Minister Giuliano Amato won a vital confidence vote. After one of the most dramatic parliamentary sessions in Italian postwar history, Amato carried the Senate vote by 143 votes to 99, with one abstention. Had he lost, he would almost certainly have resigned, opening a deep political void and plunging Italian financial markets into a tailspin.
