Beverly Hills : Teacher Layoffs Approved

Share

The Beverly Hills Unified School District has approved plans to lay off teachers and cut educational services to offset a projected $850,000 budget deficit for the 1993-94 school year.

The school board last week adopted an “austerity budget” that reduces teaching staff by the equivalent of 9.6 full-time positions for the academic year that starts in September, saving the district about $521,000.

Where the layoffs will be made will be determined later by seniority and educational program needs, school board President Richard Stone said.

The loss of teachers “will not jeopardize any educational programs,” Stone said. “It is possible there might be some larger (class) sizes.”

An additional $329,000 was cut from educational services, including two custodial positions, and from campus security, textbooks, supplies, staff training, substitute teachers and clerical help.

The service cuts are to be phased in during the current school year.
