Looking to spend some quality time away from television this weekend? Consider taking in the Cal State Dominguez Hills production of “Fences,” August Wilson’s poignant drama about the life of a former Negro League baseball star.

The critically acclaimed “Fences” received the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for drama and later captured four Tony Awards for best play, best actor (James Earl Jones), best featured actress and best director.

The production, the action of which takes place from 1957 to 1965, focuses on a baseball player who finds himself hemmed in by the contradictions of being black, male and American.

“We read through ‘Fences’ in a class of mine, and I was amazed at how responsive the students were to it,” said Bill DeLuca, assistant professor of theater arts and a director of the production. “It’s an ethnic play, but it has very universal applications. It is very much the story of the breakup of the American family, centering on relations between a father and his wife and son.”
