Roxbury Draws the Fly and the Flawed in Basic Black and Flesh

The famous, fashionable and downright funky (good and bad) clamored to last Friday’s opening of Roxbury in Santa Ana, sister to the same named supper/nightclub in West Hollywood.

The hot piece of the night: black bell-bottoms. The hip, twenty-something patrons wore them in lace, chiffon, crochet and mesh. The most popular--and concealing--version appeared in black Lycra; among those donning them were actress Lara Flynn Boyle, who matched hers with a black cabana top.

It was not a jeans affair, but some dared and got away with it, such as Tori (“Beverly Hills 90210”) Spelling who showed up in a light blue pair topped with a Vivienne Westwood 18th-Century-inspired corset. A few sported leather jeans (black, of course), including “Super Freak” Rick James.

Leather vests turned up on menswear designer Mossimo Giannulli, who wore the red, white and black signature sleeveless top over layers of Mossimo shirts. Others had a vested interest in flaunting their physiques, such as the beefy trio in the zip-front, wildly printed vests sans anything underneath.

Designers Rick Klotz of Fresh Jive and Mantrap’s Heathyr Lucero showed what big wigs they were: He covered his bald head with an auburn page boy; she donned a cotton-candy pink Marie Antoinette ‘do.

As expected at an event that doubled as a fund-raiser for the Young Professionals Against Cancer, there were too many men in conservative--albeit stylish--suits; black and creme dominated, accessorized with splashy ties.

And there shined too many sequined gowns. Where was the prom?
