Alaska Beach Trove Puts the Pot in Jackpot
A bounty of bagged marijuana washing in from the sea has sparked stern warnings from law enforcement officials and snickers from Prince William Sound residents.
Alaska state troopers said Friday they had recovered more than 300 pounds of marijuana that landed on Prince William Sound beaches in the past two weeks.
Drifting ashore were double-wrapped bags holding packed kilograms of the weed, mostly still dry, spokeswoman Janelle Martinson said.
Most has been found near the fishing town of Cordova, but at least one bag was found 300 miles to the southwest on Kodiak Island, Martinson said.
Troopers warned residents to avoid the beached bags, saying boats, planes and vehicles used to pick up the marijuana could be subject to seizure and forfeiture.
“We take it very seriously if they go out to the beach and pick it up,” Martinson said. “It’s a very serious thing to have plastic bags of marijuana washing up on the beaches.”
Martinson said no arrests have been made in connection with the case and there was no immediate information available on the source of the marijuana.
