Trustees Not Responsible

After attending the Ventura County Community College District board of trustees meeting on March 2, I came away with the dazed perception that I’d witnessed the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

In numerous memos, the district’s faculty has been informed that 400 classes are being cut from 1993-94 summer, fall and spring schedules. However, the district trustees claim never to have authorized these cuts. I can only conclude that: a) the district administration operates autonomously with the tacit approval of elected board members, or b) the district board is derelict in its duty to supervise the chancellor and his staff, or c) an evil, anonymous force is controlling and making binding decisions without the knowledge of anyone in the district.

It’s time that people who elect trustees and who pay the salary of our chancellor demand accountability before more classes are cut and before administration gives itself another raise despite a budget crisis.
