LOS ANGELES DISTRICT : Brown Hosts Discussion on Schools Settlement
After a two-hour meeting Tuesday with top Los Angeles school district officials and Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, United Teachers-Los Angeles President Helen Bernstein said she was “comfortable with everything that was discussed” about finalizing the teachers’ contract settlement.
Although she would not comment on the details of the discussion in Sacramento, Bernstein said that she was “not unhappy” about the resolution of numerous contested issues, including several that empower teachers to select class assignment by seniority.
Supt. Sid Thompson opposed those provisions, saying it is more educationally sound to have expertise, rather than seniority, determine teachers’ assignments. Both sides agreed that Brown would settle any conflicts.
Both sides are scheduled to meet again with Brown in Los Angeles on Thursday.
