Compton : Councilwoman Moore Calls for Vote on Gambling Issue

Share

Councilwoman Patricia A. Moore, who was criticized for her failure to vote on a controversial proposal to build a card casino in Compton, has filed papers to place the gambling issue before a vote of the people.

Moore said last week that although she is opposed to a gambling casino, residents of the city have the right to vote on it. However, City Clerk Charles Davis said the period in which an initiative drive can be launched may have elapsed. The city attorney’s office has until March 25 to issue an opinion, he said.

The City Council approved the $9-million, eight-acre casino project in December despite numerous demands that the city’s voters should be allowed to decide. Moore was absent for the final vote and had abstained from voting on the issue.

Compton Entertainment Inc. plans to build the casino, two restaurants, a bar and nightclub at the city’s auto mall by mid-1994.
