Books and Supplies
As a former public school educator, I believe that requiring students to pay for their own books, paper and pencils could save the state and local school districts millions of dollars. Money which could be spent on other essential public school needs.
I came to California from Kansas, which has such a functional, efficient program in which retail bookstores sell school textbooks prescribed by the state or local district. Recognized and qualified indigent students would be offered special consideration.
In addition to saving the districts money, students would have greater respect for their own personal property and, in many instances, these books owned by the student could become the foundation for a home library assisting other siblings and family members.
