Focus : UCLA Professor Tapped by Clinton
UCLA professor Fernando M. Torres-Gil has been nominated by President Clinton as U.S. assistant secretary on aging in the Department of Health and Human Services. “I’m excited about the opportunity to do my part in bringing about the changes that will improve the lives of older persons and their families,” he said.
Torres-Gil, the son of migrant farmworkers, previously served in Washington as a special assistant in the Carter Administration and as staff director for the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Aging from 1985 to 1987. Torres-Gil, who has a doctorate from Brandeis University in social policy and planning, has been active in civic commissions and local Latino organizations.
