Burbank Schools OK Metal Detector Use

Share

The use of metal detectors in random searches of public school students was approved by the Burbank school board Thursday night by a vote of 5 to 0.

The Burbank Unified School District bought 10 metal detectors for use in random searches at the high schools and middle schools two weeks ago. But the searches could not be conducted until the school board authorized principals to conduct them.

Each school will have to send out notifications to parents in English, Spanish and Armenian before the searches begin.

District Supt. Arthur Pierce expected the metal detectors to be in use sometime next week.

The advent of the metal detectors coincides with a new policy by Burbank police under which any student found with a weapon on campus will be arrested. Last week, three students, two with knives and one with a pair of nunchakus, were arrested on school grounds.
