L.A. Religious, Civic Leaders to Discuss Healing Racial Discord
Los Angeles religious and civic leaders will hold a summit Thursday to discuss barriers to healing racial divisions in the city.
Sponsored by the Interfaith Coalition to Heal L.A., the conference at Holman United Methodist Church comes at a time of anticipation and concern as the federal trial of four Los Angeles police officers charged with violating the civil rights of Rodney G. King continues.
“We are hopeful of creating a new climate of cooperation and large-scale volunteerism which will benefit our city and all who live here,” said Rabbi Harvey J. Fields, chairman of the coalition and rabbi at Wilshire Boulevard Temple.
Speakers include Los Angeles City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, Rebuild L.A. Co-Chairman Tony Salazar and Eugene Mornell, executive director of the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations.
The summit is the second event sponsored by the interfaith coalition, which was organized after last year’s civil unrest. In June, the coalition sponsored “Hands Across L.A.” in which an estimated 15,000 people joined hands to demonstrate unity and support.
