San Gabriel : Redevelopment Studied
The City Council has asked the Planning Commission to study whether the business district along parts of San Gabriel Boulevard and Las Tunas Drive shows signs of blight and qualifies for redevelopment.
If the area has failed to attract new business and maintain its buildings, City Administrator P. Michael Paules said, the city might be able to use a portion of property taxes to improve the area.
Paules said the district on San Gabriel Boulevard south of Las Tunas and on Las Tunas east of San Gabriel Boulevard offers large lots and easy freeway access, features that the city hopes will entice some large businesses such as a major supermarket or regional department store.
With redevelopment money, the city can make improvements to streets and sidewalks and can give loans and other financial assistance to new and existing businesses.
Redevelopment money is drawn from property taxes on new buildings and from the additional taxes levied on properties valued higher after sale.
Public forums and a public hearing will offer residents the chance to learn about redevelopment and offer ideas to the city, Paules said.
