SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

George Scott has been a shining example of community volunteerism. And his contributions during the past 25 years have been noticed.

Scott recently received Fountain Valley’s Citizen of the Year award.

Bob Hoxsie, president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley, said that Scott, a longtime volunteer of the youth organization, is a “shining star” who over the years has consistently given to the club and the community.

“He’s always there and he’s always smiling,” Hoxsie said. “He just can’t do enough for the city.”

The Boys and Girls Clubs nominated Scott for the award, sponsored by the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“He’s been nominated several times, so this was long overdue,” Hoxsie said.

Scott, 60, who has served 17 years on the City Council and was elected to another four-year term in November, said it was an honor to be the recipient. He also served from 1964 to 1969 on the city’s charter Parks and Recreation Commission, now called Community Services Commission.

Scott said he’s dedicated his time and efforts to the community because “this is a city that I love, and I’ve always been one who likes to do things for others.”

When Scott, father of eight, moved to the city in 1964, he didn’t know anyone.

But that didn’t last long. He said that through his volunteerism he has made plenty of lasting friendships.

“I’ve met a lot of nice people I would have not had the opportunity to meet if I wasn’t involved,” he said.

Since the early 1960s, Scott has been involved in many local organizations and youth groups. He became involved in youth sports, including coaching and managing football, basketball and baseball teams.

Because of his interest in the youth of the community, he became one of the founding members of the board of directors of the then Fountain Valley Boys Club in 1966.

Scott is involved in fund-raising efforts to build a new Fountain Valley Boys and Girls Club at Mile Square Park.

“One of my goals is to make sure that our boys and girls club is built,” he said.

Scott’s list of community service is long. “I’ve been involved in a little bit of everything,” he said.

Scott, owner of an insurance agency, has been involved in the Chamber of Commerce and a variety of local organizations such as the Jaycees, Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign War Post 9557 and Omni Service Club, as well as activities to help the handicapped and disabled.

Scott admitted that the Citizen of the Year award was the one recognition he’s always longed for.

“It was the one thing I really wanted to be able to hang on my wall,” he said, “because it’s something to be proud of.”
