ADELYN’S STORY: Former Orange Coast College German professor Adelyn Bonin of Mission Viejo has rarely discussed growing up Jewish in Hitler’s Germany. But now she’s written “Allegiances,” a book of war memoirs due out next month. She fled to Palestine at 16, against her parents’ wishes. “They were loyal Germans; they thought Hitler wouldn’t last,” she says. She became a front-lines ambulance driver for the Allies in Africa when she learned several years later her parents had been put to death at Auschwitz. “Rereading their last letters to me was the hardest part of preparing this book.”
