IBM Reported to Be Talking to RJR Chief: USA Today reported that the seven-member committee at International Business Machines Corp. looking for a new chairman recently held discussions about pay with candidate Louis Gerstner, chief executive of RJR Nabisco. Spokesmen for IBM and RJR would not comment. Gerstner, 51, was president of American Express before he left in 1989 to run RJR. His salary and bonus in 1993 exceeded $3 million, and he holds sizable RJR stock options that could be worth millions of dollar someday.
