Military Base Closings
In Richard Sybert’s Column Right (“California Has Done Its Share,” March 4) he states that the closure of military bases will only hurt California more in its recovery from the recession. Keeping these bases open in the long run will only make them a burden for the country as a whole. The main purpose for such a large military buildup was to combat the Soviet Union and the threat of communism during the Cold War. In this post-Cold War era these military bases are just huge money-gobbling relics of the past.
Sybert should stop living in the past. There’s no more arms race so therefore there shouldn’t be all these bases. Instead of the government spending massive amounts of money to maintain these bases, which in reality only help the local economy centered around them, this money should be plugged into the economy directly.
