Ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Dies
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo has died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he reportedly was being treated for leukemia. He was 61.
Junejo died Wednesday.
Junejo was president of the Pakistan Muslim League, the party whose demands for the creation of an independent homeland for Indian Muslims led to the 1947 partition of the subcontinent.
In 1985, Junejo was elected prime minister in a nationwide election. However, most political parties refused to participate, charging that the poll had been rigged by Pakistan’s military dictator, Gen. Mohammed Zia Ul-Haq.
Many believed that the mild-mannered Junejo would follow Zia’s orders. But the two were at odds on many issues, especially the 1988 Geneva accords that led to the withdrawal of Soviet troops from neighboring Afghanistan.
