TUSTIN : City, District Form Youth Issues Panel

Share

The city of Tustin and the Tustin Unified School District have agreed to coordinate efforts to provide programs and services for city youth and those living within the school district’s attendance area.

The City Council and the Board of Education signed an agreement last week that created the Tustin Area Youth Issues Committee. It is an advisory committee that will recommend educational, recreational and cultural programs for school-age youth.

The committee will review current city and school district programs, propose changes, if needed, and devise new programs and services to benefit K-12 students.

A top priority is providing adequate after-school care and recreational activities for the district’s more than 11,000 students.

The panel will be composed of eight members--two each from the council and the school board and four representatives from the community. The council will name two of the community representatives, as will the school board. Those members will serve two-year terms.

The other four committee members will include one council member and one member of the school board, each serving a one-year term. The other council member and school board member will serve for two years.

Thereafter, the term for all council members and school board members serving on the panel will be two years.

The city and school district staff will provide the committee’s staff support. The city manager and superintendent of schools may invite other public agencies to participate in the committee’s work.
