The champagne will be flowing Sunday, when Palos Verdes Art Center exhibits its collection of pieces by local artists that will be sent to a city on Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula as part of a cultural exchange.

So far, organizers of the “Peninsula to Peninsula” exchange have collected about

130 pieces, including watercolors, oil paintings, ceramics and bronze statues, said Eric Otterson of the Torrance architectural firm Edward Carson Beall & Associates, which is organizing the exchange.

The work, done by artists from the South Bay and other parts of California, will be displayed for the first time Sunday at a reception at the Palos Verdes Art Center. The event will include dancers, Russian food and a bazaar.

The collection will be displayed throughout the South Bay until August, when it will be shipped to Petropavlovsk, a city on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Artists from Petropavlovsk are sending their pieces to the art center in September.

After visiting Petropavlovsk last year, Beall thought that a cultural exchange would be a step toward opening the previously isolated region to Western culture.

Plans are under way for a student exchange as well, Otterson said.
