$2.4 Million to Help Fight Cancer

City of Hope National Medical Center’s Merchants Club raised $2.4 million at the Regal Ball celebrating the support group’s 60th anniversary March 13 at the Beverly Hilton. Gene Autry received the Norm Crosby Goodwill Ambassador Award. Funds will provide patient care, research and medical education in leukemia and other forms of cancer.

Clinica Para Las Americas, the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS Inc., Westside Children’s Center and Permanent Charities Committee’s Children’s Fund will share more than $100,000 raised March 6 at Universal Studios. The benefit included the premiere of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” and a pizza party hosted by New Line Cinema, Golden Harvest Films and the Permanent Charities Committee of the Entertainment Industries.

American Diabetes Assn., Los Angeles Chapter, raised $160,000 at its Feb. 28 dinner-dance at the Beverly Hilton. Richard Rosenberg, BankAmerica Corp. chairman and CEO, was honored. Marcia Caden and Michael Rossi were chairs. Proceeds will provide diabetes research and education.

Alzheimer’s Assn. has announced receipt of $35,000 from the Mr. & Mrs. Club of San Fernando Valley. Funds will provide assistance to Alzheimer’s patients, families and care-givers.

Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America honored Richard K. Eamer at a benefit luncheon Jan. 12 at the Century Plaza. Net proceeds of $60,000 will help fund inner-city scouting programs.

Neighborhood Youth Assn.’s 10th annual Scholarship and Community Service Award Dinner, Feb. 12 at the Riviera Country Club, was underwritten by First Interstate Bancorp. Proceeds of $41,000 will support programs for at-risk youths and low-income families in the Western and Harbor regions of Los Angeles. Melissa Fetter, Julianna Roosevelt Derby, Stephanie Ehlers and Susan Ebey were chairs.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center received a $200,000 check from the Medallions, a support group, Feb. 23 at Jimmy’s Restaurant, Beverly Hills. The Medallions have raised $6.7 million over 49 years to support the hospital’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, the Myocardial Infarction Research Center and Laser Lab.

L.A. Chamber Orchestra received $265,000, proceeds from the Feb. 20 Zimbabwe Shona sculptures exhibit/sale held at Glendale Galleria. Proceeds will provide music education in the Los Angeles schools.

California Community Foundation has awarded grants to the following: Los Angeles Mission Foundation, $5,638, for a new computer literacy program for Spanish-speaking homeless; Skid Row Access Inc., $10,000, to develop self-employment opportunities; Women’s Care Cottage, $10,000, and Shelter Partnership, $15,000, for expansion of services to the homeless.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary announced at its Jan. 7 installation luncheon the fourth installment of more than $200,000 toward its $1-million, five-year pledge to the Torrance Memorial Health Care Foundation. The money was raised by a gift shop, baby photos and sales of baked goods throughout the year.

Magic Johnson Foundation received $60,000 raised Feb. 7 at a gala at the Century Plaza. The event was sponsored by Century City Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds will provide money for HIV/AIDS education, prevention and care.

American Friends of the Israel Museum West Coast Committee held its third annual membership luncheon March 9 at the Regency Club in Westwood. Net proceeds of $50,000 will go toward underwriting projects at the museum.
