Five local nonprofit groups have been awarded more than $12,000 in grants by the city.

The largest awards of $3,600 each were given to the South Orange County Community Services Council for maintaining an information telephone line for social services and to South County Senior Services for providing help to senior citizens.

Other groups funded by the city include the League of Women Voters, which received $1,000 for publishing a brochure for Mission Viejo residents on available city services.

The National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis was given $3,000 to help defray transportation costs for children attending the group’s annual Camp for Disabled Youth.

Also receiving money was the Rancho Viejo Women’s Club, which was awarded $1,350 to help fund scholarships for women re-entering the work force and for high school students.

The city funding goes to service organizations that offer programs benefiting residents. The city has budgeted about $50,000 this year to support nonprofit groups; awards are made each fiscal quarter.

Organizations interested in applying for fourth-quarter funding may call Virginia Chavez, city community services coordinator, at (714) 348-2061.
