The Debate Over Abortion

Susan Carpenter McMillan’s argument in “Baby Ana--an Abortion That Failed” (Column Right, March 14) is based on twisted logic and a misconstrued, selective interpretation of the opinions in the Supreme Court decision, Doe vs. Bolton.
The case McMillan cites is clearly a case concerning medical malpractice. The case of “Baby Ana” is one of, unfortunately, multitudinous medical tragedies where physicians have erred and the consequences are devastating. The tragedy is not, however, remotely related to the legality of abortion. Every (legal) medical procedure, from simple suturing to complicated neurosurgery, carries with it many risks.
The horror and criminal implications of Baby Ana should not be minimized. However, the Supreme Court decisions affirming legality of abortions is far removed from and devoid of responsibility for the actions of one particular medical team.
