Federal and state authorities Monday extended the application deadline for Southern California residents who suffered uninsured losses in the winter storms.

Residents of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties have until May 5 to apply for the federal programs, which include rental and mortgage assistance and low-interest loans to rebuild houses and businesses, said Alex Newton, spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The financial help is available to people with homeowners, business and flood insurance that did not cover damage to their residences or companies during the January and February rains that pummeled Southern California, Newton said.
