BEIJING : Credit Check

World Bank President Lewis Preston is due to arrive Saturday for a 10-day visit to China “to get a better appreciation of China’s economic agenda,” according to a bank official.

Preston will “see the development in China since the late 1970s” and study Beijing’s program for the future, World Bank Vice President Gautam Kaji said.

The World Bank sharply cut its lending to China immediately after the 1989 crackdown on China’s pro-democracy movement. But loans in the fiscal year that ended last June totaled $2.5 billion--more than to any other country.
