Fortune magazine published its annual ranking of the nation’s biggest industrial companies Tuesday, with General Motors Corp. at the top for an eighth straight year despite staggering 1992 losses and thousands of layoffs.

The Fortune 500, which has been published annually since 1955, is easily the most celebrated ranking of U.S. business, although Forbes and Business Week have lists of their own.
