SYLMAR : Girl, 17, Is Sentenced in Murder of Neighbor

A 17-year-old girl was sentenced Wednesday to the California Youth Authority for murdering a librarian who lived in her Northridge condominium complex.

The girl, the eldest of three teen-age sisters convicted of killing 62-year-old Meta Murphy, could remain in CYA custody until she turns 25. The girl was convicted two weeks ago of first-degree murder for her role in what Sylmar Juvenile Court Judge Morton Rochman called a “heinous killing.”

Prosecutors said the sisters conspired to kill Murphy, a librarian who had befriended the three girls, on Nov. 20, 1991. Testimony indicated that the two younger girls--now 13 and 16--sneaked into Murphy’s apartment and stabbed her 11 times, then dumped her body in a utility closet and covered it with coats.

The eldest sister remained at home next door, where she turned up the volume on two stereos to drown out Murphy’s screams, according to prosecutors.
