SANTA ANA : Goodwill Shuts Store on South Main Street

Starting today, clothing, toys, books and other merchandise will no longer be sold at the Goodwill Industries building on South Main Street.

As a cost-cutting measure, Goodwill closed the discount store Wednesday. It had been the organization’s oldest retail outlet in the county, opening for business in February, 1968.

Spokeswoman Cindy Gertz said that the store at 1306 S. Main St. will move its merchandise to the Goodwill Plant store at 5th and Fairview streets here.

On average, the Main Street store has served more than 400 people daily. However, the slow economy has hurt the number and quality of donations as well as sales, prompting officials to close the store, she said.

Manager Lucy Martinez said that the store has been an important asset to low-income residents who live nearby.

“I think it’s sad,” Martinez said of the closure. “A lot of people are saying they feel bad about it.”
