Layoffs at American Airlines on Horizon: Layoffs are in store for an estimated 500 pilots, 400 maintenance workers and other employees at American Airlines as the carrier concentrates on its top-performing markets, a spokesman said. “The strategy in part is to make the airline somewhat smaller and reduce or eliminate our presence in markets that are not performing well, and increase and expand our presence in areas in which we are performing the best,” American spokesman Al Becker said.
