LOS ANGELES : Council Bars Colorado Trip, Citing Anti-Gay Measure
In its first such move, the City Council on Friday canceled a planned trip to Colorado later this month by two city employees because of a city-imposed travel boycott protesting the state’s anti-gay law.
Two city parks workers had requested permission to attend a clinic at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on the recruitment and training of minority youths in swimming. The total cost was $642.
In December, the council voted to ban all city travel to Colorado to protest a measure that repealed local laws outlawing discrimination against gays and lesbians.
“Our timing was bad,” said parks supervisor Pam Bryant, who maintained that the recent controversies over foreign travel also prompted the crackdown. She said the request will be resubmitted next year.
