WESTERN HEIGHTS : Grants Awarded for Improvements
The Western Heights Neighborhood Assn. has received $10,000 in grants from Sears Savings Bank for security improvements and beautification projects in its neighborhood in the West Adams district.
The group, which has a membership of about 75 families in the area bounded by Western and Arlington avenues on the east and west, and 20th and 21st streets on the north and south, plans to install gates to close two crime-ridden alleys, said Sue German, the group’s president.
The group also plans to use the money to plant trees, begin a garden on a lot, grow vines on graffiti-covered walls and fund other improvement projects.
The nearby Adams-Normandie Neighborhood Assn. received $10,000 in grants from Sears in January. The Glendale-based bank, a subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck & Co., awards at least one grant a month to community groups in Los Angeles County, said John N. Hampton, senior vice president for community relations.
“This has been a real shot in the arm for us because it means we’re finally going to get to do some things that we’ve been wanting to do,” German said.
