The Decline of Los Angeles
In response to the letters (March 10) concerning the closure of the Sheraton-Town House and the Bullocks Wilshire, the citizens of this city are seeing just the tip of the iceberg in the decline of a city.
Why are these businesses leaving? It is really quite simple. They are terrified of what is happening in Los Angeles. Crime is at an all-time high. Homicides were up to a record 1,095 in 1992. Businesses are afraid for their employees, families and/or guests. They see the Police Department as being unable to keep the streets safe, which, unfortunately, is a fact.
We are down 400 officers from two years ago. Our officers are trying to do more with less, and it is just not working. They are outgunned, not backed up, safety equipment is outdated and worn out, but still they give 110%. What do they get in return for all of their hard work and dedication? No contract and second-guessed by every politician from Compton to Pasadena.
The City Council is going to have to make some hard decisions regarding additional money for police services. Let’s all hope it happens before it is too late.
