FASHION STATEMENTS

Silly me! In the Feb. 28 issue I expected to find the comics where they regularly appear. Instead, I found them in the magazine’s Style section, which was featuring women’s fashion (“Future Shock”).

There they were, models with white-powdered faces, wearing vacuous expressions and not-too-bright outfits. One had what appeared to be a bigger-than-life fright wig; they all were surrounded by props of broken clay pots, swirls of concertina wire and skeletonized lamps. These “fashions” ranged from $500 to $1650.

I wanted to share this ludicrous display with someone, but could only think of the woman in the supermarket driveway, huddled in the damp cold wearing thrift-store clothes.
